Designing Libraries gets a makeover - Tue, 20 Mar 2012

At an uncertain and challenging time for libraries, the new-look Designing Libraries website is a showcase for new investment and innovation.

With its many examples of inspiring and functional library buildings, Designing Libraries has long been an important and well-used source of information for anyone planning a new library or a library refurbishment. Its database forms a current and permanent record of design development and innovation for both public and academic libraries.

The new website aims to build on the site's achievements and reputation as a collaborative resource by providing even more online resources, a regular newsletter and a greater international perspective. During 2012 it will expand its coverage to include design developments in school libraries.

Designing Libraries Executive Director, David Lindley, says: "Even though I have been close to the library sector for many years, in the process of developing the website content I have been astonished by both the current level of investment in library building infrastructure and the innovation we are seeing in libraries of all types. It is heartening to know we are able to combine vision, leadership and originality in ways that promise a great - if very different - future for our libraries."

Designing Libraries has changed its status from a grant-funded project, managed and hosted at Aberystwyth University, to become a Community Interest Company supported by sponsorship from prominent library design and technology companies.

Karen Latimer, Chair of the Designing Libraries Advisory Board, adds: "I am delighted that we have been able to make this transition so that Designing Libraries can continue to provide the library community with an invaluable resource demonstrating best practice in the design and use of inspirational library spaces."
